Waxy Bar
Waxy Bar—taking its name from “wax,” a term for vinyl records—was a live concert and vinyl-listening bar above Club Zukunft in Zurich, designed and curated by Ronny Hunger. Conceived as a space for immersive musical experiences and cultural exchange, it hosted more than 120 concerts and an even greater number of vinyl-only DJ sets between February 2023 and March 2025. The visual identity moved away from conventional event promotion based on artist photography and genre labels. Inspired by 1970s and 1980s billboards, generic product packaging and Ed Ruscha’s typographic practice, the design system used bold typography and enigmatic headlines to transform event announcements into ironic product advertisements. Concerts were presented as objects of desire, building atmosphere and anticipation through playful, narrative-driven copy. This reductive visual language extended across posters, flyers, the venue’s interior, video commercials, merchandise and a custom beer collaboration, forming a coherent identity and introducing a distinctive mode of cultural communication.
