The book design for 94 Strange Sensations: A Dictionary of the Unseen translates an investigation of images that resist perception into a two-part publication. Created during the seminar Poetics of the Unseen, led by Sarah Owens and Björn Franke in the MA Visual Communication at ZHdK, the first part, A Ghost Story for Grown-Ups, presents images using a red-reveal printing technique. Initially obscured by fields of visual noise, the images become visible when viewed through a red foil, turning the act of seeing into a physical interaction. The second part brings together 94 numbered terms relating to operational, imagined and forensic images, interpreted through images, poems, quotations, diagrams and sketches. Large typography and outlined empty image fields form a fragmentary dictionary in which absence becomes an active element of the design.
